9 Day Top Rwanda Safaris

Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Akagera National park.
Depending on your arrival time meet and greet our company driver guide at the airport who transfers you to either Kigali or Akagera national park. If time permits and you transfer to the park, have an evening game drive and have a chance to look at some animals before they get back to their habitats. Overnight and dinner at Akagera Lodge.

Day 2: Morning game drives and afternoon boat trip
Early morning game drives in the park and in the afternoon a canoe ride on Lake Ihema to see the large number of hippo, the huge Nile crocodile and birds. Overnight and dinner at Akagera Lodge.

Day 3: Transfer to Ruhengeri
Early start for Kinigi. The journey north goes through the beautiful terraced hillsides that show much of Rwanda landscape, gradually climbing to the base of the awesome volcanoes, sometimes with as many as five peaks visible. You will have a late lunch on arrival at PNV. Meals and overnight stay at Volcanoes Virunga Lodge/Mountain gorilla view lodge/Kinigi guest house.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking expedition
Past breakfast leave for gorilla tracking in Parc National des Volcans. Tracking the gorillas through the light mountain forest of the Virunga is a wonderful experience. If you are lucky you can get to see and spend time with the gorillas (this takes about an hour), get back to the lodge in time for a late lunch! Some gorilla families however are more elusive, and tracking can take a full day, especially when it is wet and muddy. Meals and overnight stay at Volcanoes Virunga Lodge/Mountain gorilla view lodge/Kinigi guest house.

Day 5: Golden monkey tracking and a visit to Dianne Fossey
Have breakfast before you set off for golden monkeys tracking and also visit Dian Fossey’s grave the only hero for the great apes in Rwanda.
Meals and overnight stay at Volcanoes Virunga Lodge/Mountain gorilla view lodge/Kinigi guest house.

Day 6: Drive to Nyungwe forest.
Past an early breakfast, head to Nyungwe. Visit the old palace in Nyanza. Drive past green hills of tea and the vast Nyungwe Forest. Meals and overnight stay at Nyungwe forest lodge /ORTPN Rest house/Gisakura guest house

Day 7: Forest Walk.
Go on an escorted walk in search of the large groups of Colobus monkeys and birds including the Rwenzori Turaco and have picnic lunch. Return late in the afternoon and relax at your hotel. Dinner and overnight at ORTPN Rest house/Gisakura Guest House Nyungwe.

Day 8: Morning Forest Walk and Chimpanzee Tracking
Past breakfast, leave for a guided nature walk and chimp tracking in Nyungwe forest. Walk on various nature trails in Nyungwe and connect with nature while exploring Nyungwe unique features including waterfalls and orchids in the high altitude swamps. In the afternoon (depending on trekking time), Visit local artisan groups to learn and participate in this and other local community income generating projects. This is also an opportunity to buy local crafts products or Watch cultural dance performed by one of the local community dance groups. Dinner and overnight at Gisakura Guest House Nyungwe.

Day 9: Depart for Kigali
Leave for Kigali. If time allows go for a tour of the city including a visit to the market, a pottery project, handicraft shops, the Franco-Rwandan cultural centre and the genocide memorial. Transfer to the airport for your flight home.
